Student Status

The next Student Status Committee meeting will take place on Wednesday 1st February 2012. A schedule will be available closer to the time.  (The deadline for Applications for this meeting is Friday 27th January 2012 at 12h00).

If you have any queries or need more information please email the Student Status contact point ssc@ul.ie and will endeavor to respond to you as soon as possible.

A student can make an application to the Student Status Committee provided that they are current UL students for at least one set of exams, regardless of outcome. The Student Status Committee meets three times yearly in February, June/July & September. There are at present 30 Student Status Committees and the Courses dealt with by each committee can be accessed here SSC Courses

The Student Status Committee reviews the following applications 

  • Re-admission
  • Leave of absence
  • Internal Transfer
  • Exemptions from modules, Co-op and Erasmus
  • Appeals against Academic Council grading Committee decisions
  • Review of students records who have completed a link-in module

Readmission
Any student can apply for readmission to a course provided they were current for one set of exams. If a student is told to repeat a year / semester in one academic year and does not repeat in that period, they must apply for readmission.

 

It is a requirement of the University for certain programmes that students will be required to undergo a Garda Vetting process. This requirement is due to the external placement element of the programme which will bring the student into a position of trust and may involve unsupervised access to students and/or vunerable adults.

Leave of Absence
A Student can apply for a leave of absence provided they meet the following criteria:

  1. Students must have completed one full semester at UL
  2. Students cannot be carrying any deficient grades(this may be wavered due to medical reason)

The following are reasons why a leave could be granted
Certified Illness, Financial Hardship, Family Bereavement, Psychological, emotional or social problems or vocational uncertainty.

 


Internal Transfer

A Student can apply for an internal transfer provided the following criteria are met.

  1. The student has been a current student for one semester
  2. The receiving College or Department offers places under the Internal transfer mechanism
  3. The student has attained the CAO points for the course he/she wishes to transfer into.

If a Student does not have the required CAO points, the students CAO points must be within 20 points of the required CAO points and the students QCA must be 2.60 or greater with no deficient grades. Point 1 & 2 must also be adhered to.

Exemption
Students can apply for exemptions in modules or placements, documentation must attached to exemption application, which will clearly state why the exemption. E.g. transcript or in the case of Co-op a CV.

 

Students who have to repeat a year or semester are not entitled to seek exemptions.

If students are seeking an exemption from Co-op & Erasmus which run over 1 full year, they may skip from yr 2 sem 1 to Year 3 sem 2, if the exemption is granted. These Students must inform SAA prior to Student Status meeting if they wish to skip the year.


Appealing Academic Council Grading Committee

A student who wishes to appeal an Academic Council grading decision must send the appeal in writing to SAA prior to the Student Status Meeting. Please note that Academic Regulations cannot be broken regardless of appeal.

If a student misses the deadline to apply for an I grade( within 5 days after the last exam in January, May & September) The student can apply for I grades by sending a letter of appeal along with medical documentation. The Student Status Committee cannot grant an I grade but can require the I grade committee to reconvene to consider the I grade appeal.

Please note that if the Student Status Committee recommend that an I grade committee should be reconvened to consider an I grade application. The student must contact the medical centre/ Counselling department directly to arrange an appointment with the I grade committee.


Link-In Students
Any student who has completed a link- in module over an academic semester or year will be reviewed by the Student Status Committee. If the link in module is successfully completed the Student Status Committee will recommend that the student may progress to the next year of the course. However if the link in module is failed the Committee may recommend repeats, link in again or discontinue.
