If you are new to Horizon 2020, visit the European Commission Horizon 2020 site, which gives an introduction to the programme. Here, you will find information on several topics, including

Horizon 2020 launches funding calls to solicit proposals for individual schemes. Across the wide range of Horizon 2020 work programmes, there are calls open at almost all times. The Calls Section of the Participant Portal provides detailed information on funding calls, including open, forthcoming and closed calls. This includes call-specific guidelines, templates, evaluation criteria, etc.

The 3 main pillars of Horizon 2020 are :




Horizon 2020 funding schemes are often divided into 2 categories:

  • 'Bottom-Up' schemes, which can fund any research area and where applicants propose research projects of their choosing. The Excellent Science pillar is typically comprised of these schemes.
  • 'Top-Down' schemes, for which the European Commission issues specific topics it wants to fund, and applicants propose research projects to address these topics. The Societal Challenges and Industrial Leadership pillars are typically comprised of these schemes.
