Introduction

The MSc in Speech and Language Therapy (Professional Qualification) is offered in the School of Health Science over two years full-time as a route to qualification for professional practice for applicants who have already attained a degree. The programme has approval from the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists. The Master of Science degree will be undertaken through an intensive programme of full-time study involving academic and placement modules over two years including summer study periods. Placement components form a cornerstone of studies in Speech and Language Therapy and are undertaken via weekly placements and a full-time block placement.

Objectives

  • Provide graduate entry studies in the clinical health science specialty of Speech & Language Therapy to suitable applicants.
  • Prepare scientifically qualified practitioners who are ready to enter the challenging professional field of Speech & Language Therapy.
  • Develop and maintain high quality clinical science research and teaching in the specialist field of Speech & Language Therapy at the University of Limerick.

Programme Content

The programme is run over two years on an intensive study basis. Some placement components will be completed through a full-time block placement in Ireland or abroad and some placement will be conducted through weekly visits.

Semester 1 

Developmental speech disorders, Linguistics for speech language therapy 1, Voice and oncology disorders, Pre-school developmental language disorders,  Human anatomy and physiology associated with Speech & Hearing, Clinical practice 1.

Semester 2 

School-age developmental language disorders, Acquired neurological speech and language disorders 1, Linguistics for speech-language therapy 2, Speech language therapy project 1, Clinical practice 2.

Summer study 

Clinical practice 3.

Semester 3
People with additional needs, Acquired neurological speech and language disorders 2, Speech and language therapy project 2, Cognitive Psychology & Psycholinguistics, Clinical practice 4.

Semester 4
Fluency & abnormal and social psychology, Eating, drinking and swallowing disorders,  Speech and language therapy project 3, Professional issues and complex care management . 

Summer study 
Clinical practice 5.

Entrance requirements

Applicants must have attained an award of at least 2.2 in their undergraduate degree.

Please note that formal notification of undergraduate degree results must be available at the time of applying.

Where an applicant's first language is neither English nor Irish, excellent use of one of these languages must be demonstrated (either by having completed a degree in an English or Irish speaking country or by passing the International English Language Testing System exam, Academic Format, with an overall grade level of at least 8 and no score below 7 in any individual part).

Garda clearance is also a requirement for this programme.

Applications must include:

  • A supporting statement of no more than two A4 pages detailing any relevant education (related modules completed as part of a degree, for example) and details of work experience you have had with people with communication difficulties and/or other special needs, other relevant experience and any other factors that you feel strengthen your application for the course.
  • Completed Work Experience Form
  • 2 references (one academic and one work related)
  • Qualification transcripts and certificates
  • English language qualification if English is not your first language
  • Certified English translations of your transcripts/certificates where the originals are in a language other than English.
  • A copy of your birth certificate (long document)

    This course commences at the end of August.

Garda Clearance
Please note that Garda Clearance will be required of as placements involve working with children or vulnerable adults.  Applicants will be asked to complete an additional form that will be forwarded by the Postgraduate Admissions Office to the Garda Central Vetting Unit for clearance.  The Garda clearance process can take approximately 6 to 8 weeks to complete.  In cases where any issues arise around clearance, they will be referred in confidence to the Dean, Graduate School, who will contact the applicant.
