Introduction
Clinical Therapies at the University of Limerick is offering a Postgraduate Diploma/Masters in Clinical Therapies (Physiotherapy/Speech & Language Therapy/Occupational Therapy) commencing in September. This programme is open to qualified Physiotherapists, Speech & Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists only. It aims to produce graduates who are committed to life long learning. The programme is designed to expand existing professional knowledge and to produce high quality evidence based practitioners who are better positioned to develop their individual disciplines as well as the wider health agenda. The programme will offer participants the opportunity to critically examine and reflect on their own practice and to implement mechanisms of change to enhance current practice.
Objectives
The programme aims to develop graduates who are able to:
- Develop evidence based approaches to service delivery
- Enhance the application of research processes in practice
- Develop and refine specialist knowledge to further advance current and future practice
- Promote multidisciplinary team working
- Develop a comprehensive view of healthcare delivery
Programme of Study
The programme will be offered on a part-time or full-time basis over a maximum of 5 years. Students must successfully complete 6 modules (including two core modules) to be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Therapies. Students wishing to progress from the Postgraduate Diploma to the Masters programme must achieve a minimum 2.1 award. Successful completion of a thesis is required to be awarded a Masters in Clinical Therapies.
Modules will be delivered in a manner that allows students to focus on their own areas of practice and to explore issues of relevance to their own practice. Shared modules will further enhance the learning experience by offering the opportunity to learn and develop as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Content
A number of modules are available on the programme. However, not all will be offered each semester. Please check our websites listed below for up to date information on what modules are being offered. Normally, a minimum of 6 students must be registered for each module before it can proceed.
Semester 1
*Evidence-based practice (multidisciplinary), Independent learning module (multidisciplinary), Neurological rehabilitation (multidisciplinary), Exercise and occupation for health (multidisciplinary), Child development and health (multidisciplinary), The Science of occupation (unidisciplinary: Occupational Therapy), Developmental speech disorders (unidisciplinary: Speech and Language Therapy).
Semester 2
*Research methods for clinical therapists (multidisciplinary), Educating in professional context (multidisciplinary), Researching health and illness (multidisciplinary), Neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy (unidisciplinary: Physiotherapy), Acquired neurological speech and language disorders (unidisciplinary: Speech and Language Therapy),School age developmental language disorders (unidisciplinary: Speech and Language Therapy), Ageing, health and society (multidisciplinary), Independent learning module (multidisciplinary)

Entry Requirements
Applicants should have a degree (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) or equivalent in Physiotherapy / Occupational Therapy / Speech and Language Therapy. Normally, applicants should have a minimum of one year's post-qualification experience. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an IELTS score with their application The IELTS requirement is a composite IELTS score of 7.5 and not less than 7 in any one component.
Please Note: participation in and/or completion of this programme does not qualify you to practise in Ireland as a Chartered Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist or Speech and Language Therapist.
Continuing Professional Development
We welcome people taking one or two modules as a Continuing Professional Development opportunity. Please note that if you are subsequently considering proceeding on to the PGDip/MSc, you are advised to discuss possible implications with the Course Leader.
Linking in with other relevant Postgraduate programmes
Up to two of the six modules can be taken in another university or from other areas within UL after consultation and agreement with the Course Leader. To be awarded an University of Limerick PGDip, you must complete a total of six modules.
