UL GEMS facility at South Tipperary General Hospital Opened by Minister for Health

Graduate Entry Medical School

The Minister for Health Dr James Reilly has officially opened the University of Limerick (UL) Graduate Entry Medical School facility at South Tipperary General Hospital.  The facility in Clonmel provides teaching and education space for medical students on placement at South Tipperary General Hospital (STGH), one of UL Medical School's five affiliated teaching sites. Currently, there are eight UL students based at STGH at any given time and the expectation is that this number will increase as student numbers grow.

In addition, UL will have up to 12 students undertaking their clinical training in General Practice in the South Tipperary area.

Prof Stewart Walsh, Associate Professor of Surgery and Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Mid-Western Hospitals Group, described the facility as a sign of UL's involvement in ensuring additional medical graduates in Ireland and the ongoing positive collaboration with South Tipperary General Hospital.

"We are delighted to have had the excellent South Tipperary General Hospital available to us to enhance this initiative at the coal face as it were. Today's official opening by the new Minister in Clonmel is an exciting development for Irish medicine, a milestone for UL and a significant event for STGH. Indeed, a survey of all UL medical students showed that the educational environment in Clonmel received the highest ratings of all clinical sites," he said.

The new Graduate Entry Medical School facility at STGH will allow students to participate in lectures, has dedicated study space and is equipped with video conferencing facilities to link Clonmel based students with students at other sites, including St. Luke's General Hospital for Carlow/Kilkenny.
