Mayo Student from University of Limerick receives BOC Gases Postgraduate Bursary

L-R: Mr Gerry Donovan, BOC Gases, presenting Ms Treasa Golden, Postgraduate Student with the Department of Chemical and Environmental Sciences, University of Limerick the 2011 BOC Gases Postgraduate Bursary Award, Dr Catherine Adley, Head of Department, Chemical & Environmental Sciences, University of Limerick,

The 2011 BOC Gases Postgraduate Bursary was presented to Treasa Golden from the School of Chemical and Environmental Sciences in University of Limerick

Treasa has completed a BSc. with concurrent Teacher Education in Biological Sciences and Chemistry in UL in 2006.  Following this she received a FIRM scholarship from the Department of Agriculture and Food for postgraduate research under Dr JJ Leahy & Dr Teresa Curtin.

Her research focuses on the application of nanotechnology to produce novel Catalysts for the reduction of trans fatty acids in hydrogenated vegetable oils. This includes investigation into the morphological and electronic effects of catalysts on trans selectivity in the hydrogenation reaction.  Hydrogenated oils are used in food products as they increase shelf life and flavour stability, but they generally contain large amounts of Trans fats which can lead to coronary heart disease

Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Limerick, Gerry Donovan, BOC Managing Director, said: "We wish Treasa every success with her future career.  BOC Gases is well aware of the importance of research for the continuing development of the successful high technology companies which are established in Ireland.  We are delighted to play our part in support of this vital activity".
