4th Edition of On-line Student Sociology Journal Launched at UL

Sociology students at the University of Limerick, celebrated the launch of the latest edition of their on-line student journal this Thursday (January 27th). The fourth edition of  Socheolas: Limerick Student Journal of Sociology is  published by the Department of Sociology and provides undergraduate and postgraduate students with a platform to share their sociological research and theories. It is the first of its kind in Ireland and it demonstrates once again the pioneering and innovative ways in which UL engages in teaching and research.  The latest edition includes articles on media coverage of public service workers; backpacking and drug crime.  In launching Socheolas, the President of University of Limerick Professor Don Barry said "The journal offers a wonderful opportunity for students to improve their writing and sociological skills, both as authors and as readers of sociological research.  Participation with the project increases student identification with Sociology as a discipline and offers students experience of the process of editing and rewriting for publication in a supportive and constructive environment."  The Head of the Department of Sociology Dr. Eoin Devereux commended both the student contributors and the editorial team. He said  " The students have written about themes that are of obvious interest to them but their essays also reflect the kinds of themes being covered in our undergraduate and postgraduate courses.  The hallmark of a strong Sociology department is that it is critically engaged with the social issues that it finds itself surrounded by.  The Limerick Student Journal of Sociology is a compelling example of how Sociology students in partnership with their lecturers can contribute to debates about contemporary society. "
