UL Chancellor highlights research as key contributor to knowledge economy

As the University of Limerick commences four days of conferring ceremonies which will see  2,327 students graduate, UL Chancellor, Mr Peter Malone commented in his conferring address on the success of UL's established reputation as Ireland's leading university in industry-led research and the successes of that relationship in recent years.

Grads2In commending collaboration between leading researchers and industry as part of the development of Ireland's Knowledge Economy, the Chancellor said "notable among the University's industry success stories are; Stokes Bio Ltd now employing 20 people and recipient of venture capital and state grants in excess of €3m"

"Powervation has its genesis in UL with a PhD engineering scholar, working to solve a problem with technology for power circuit management. Along with colleagues from the university, they established the company, which this year was voted Irish Start-up Company most likely to reach €100m in annual sales."

"Aughinish Alumina works very closely with UL in areas of research in their industrial processes, leading to dramatic cost savings for the company.  The Aughinish plan is now seen as a major R&D hub for the company and continues to employ about 500 people in this region. "

Chancellor Malone also urged present and future students to keep faith in this challenging environment.  "It is important to remember in these difficult economic times that your potential is limitless. Do not give up. Do not say everything is difficult at present and I see no future.  Many generations like my own came through difficult times and had a vision. "

In his conferring address, Chancellor Malone encouraged students to recognize "integrity, honesty and hard work".  Commenting on the future landscape and expectations of UL alumni, the Chancellor said, "many institutions, once pillars of our greater society, have lost their way and the results have been devastating. We bestow upon you today not only a degree and all the rights and privileges that come with your achievement, but also the expectations that you will be leaders of our greater community and we need your success to build our future."

This week 2327 graduates will receive awards from the University of Limerick in a range of disciplines including, Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, Business Education & Health Sciences, Engineering & Science. Some 47 PhDs will also be awarded as part of UL's commitment to Fourth Level education in Ireland.
