The recently established UL International Society was awarded Best Society of the Year Award from the Board of Irish College Societies (BICS). The BICS awarded the UL International Society at their annual National Society of the Year Awards which took place this year in the Hudson Bay Hotel in Athlone April 15. The UL International Society was established by UL students David Studer, Kieran Phibbs and Lucy Fitzgerald last July 2008 through a meeting at the University Scholars Club.
The aim of the National Awards is to reward individuals that provide a brilliant quality of society activity to student members. It is also a time to celebrate the vital importance and value that third level societies bring to college life. The Board of Irish College Societies is a national organisation dedicated to providing a national forum for the societies in Ireland's Universities, Colleges and Institutes of Education.
The University of Limerick UL has been welcoming International Students through the Erasmus programme since 1987 developing links with more than 200 European Universities. The International Society which aims to enhance greater intergration between Irish and international students through organising both on and off campus events has proved to be an exiting addition to this programme. David Studer, PRO for the society commented on the importance of such a faculty especially for UL who is has strongly established itself internationally; "my own Erasmus experience was enhanced by a very pro-active international society. As a result of that, I've maintained connections with people all over the world which emodies the whole idea of the Erasmus programme".
This isn't the first time that UL has taken home an award at the BICS Annual Society of the Year Awards; the UL Outreach Society won Best New Society of the Year in 2008. With 39 clubs and 23 societies available to international students including a new award winning society that they can call their own there has never been a better time for International Students to study at UL.
