At a glittering black-tie evening held on Saturday, 18 October, the University of Limerick Alumni Association hosted the 3rd Annual Bank of Ireland UL Alumni Awards. Honoured this year are three UL graduates who have made outstanding contributions in their particular fields since their graduation from the University. Awards were made to Dr Hugh O'Donnell, CEO, Kentz Group, (Business Award); Malcolm Quigley, Director, VSO Ireland (Humanitarian Award) and Dr Derek O'Keeffe (Achievement Award).
Speaking at the Awards evening held at the Clarion Hotel at Steamboat Quay in Limerick city, Dr Matthew Cannon, PhD '01 & Chairperson, UL Alumni Association (ULAA) said that "the purpose of these awards is to recognise the wealth of achievement of UL graduates, which is increasing tremendously every year. The UL Alumni community worldwide now numbers almost 50,000 and we know the achievements of these Award recipients will inspire not just fellow-alumni but also current and future students".
Professor Don Barry, President UL said: "A University is not just about the campus, the facilities and the buildings - it's about the people. The diversity and significance of the impact of this evening's award winners' achievements, reflects extremely well on UL and we take great pride in the achievements of our alumni. I have been inspired to learn of the major contributions they have made through their humanitarian, business, science, research and overall endeavours"
Representing Bank of Ireland, the event's exclusive sponsor, Paula Hanly, Branch Manager of the Bank's Univerity Branch said the Bank "has a long association with honouring excellence and therefore delighted to join with the University of Limerick Alumni Association in recognising the outstanding achievements made by UL alumni in different walks of life. We are proud to continue our association with this great celebration".
