Online Referencing Guide
The Glucksman Library has compiled an online referencing guide to help students with referencing. This set of resources provides information on:
· The Library's Cite It Right Guide to Harvard Referencing Style, 2nd ed.
· Online Tutorials on citing and referencing using Harvard UL.
· Guidelines on particular referencing styles
· How to reference specific types of research material
· Citation generators
EndNote Desktop
EndNote is a bibliographic management software program which allows you to create your own reference database and then to use that database to generate a bibliography in your papers, books and theses. It is available in Desktop and Web versions. You can use EndNote Desktop to make detailed formatting changes, export directly from databases and create bibliographies in Word.
The UL Research Support Librarian offers regular Introduction to EndNote classes*. The class covers:
-
Creation and management of EndNote libraries
-
Working with Word
-
Exporting from databases to EndNote
-
EndNote Web for Researchers
Indexed slides from the Introduction to EndNote class are available to view or download

Installing EndNote Desktop
We have recently upgraded to EndNote version X5 on the UL campus build. To find EndNote in your Program files, or to install EndNoteX5 go to:
Start > Programs > Specialist Software > EndNote Version X5
If you have a UL owned PC, Mac or laptop that does not have EndNote installed, you may be able to borrow an installation disk from the library. Ask at the library information desk.
To purchase a personal copy for your PC, Mac or laptop, go to the Adept Science website. To avail of the UL discount you would need to be on campus so that the IP address is recognised as the University of Limerick. Go to www.adeptscience.co.uk/a4e , in the "Enter the Adept4Education Web Store" box, click "Login Now!" and choose the version of EndNote which you require. The cost is roughly €80.
What's new in EndNote
EndNote Web
EndNote Web is available to all UL staff and students. It allows you to access your EndNote library from any PC with an internet connection and to create bibliographies in Word.
Creating an EndNote Web account.
When you first sign up and create an EndNote Web account you must be on-campus. Once you have created your account you will be able to use EndNote from anywhere once you have a PC with Internet access. To create an account go to https://www.myendnoteweb.com/ and click sign up.

Linking to Articles and other E-Resources while Off-Campus
You may have URLs/links to articles or ebooks in your EndNote desktop or Web libraries which work perfectly on campus but when off campus you are asked to log in, even if you have already logged in via ezproxy. This is because when you log in off campus, the URL of every library resource you see is automatically altered to include "proxy.lib.ul.ie". This tells the database provider that you are affiliated with UL and are entitled to full text as normal.
If you click a URL such as http://isc.sagepub.com/content/42/2/78, on campus you will be able to access the article but off campus you will be asked to log in because you are not recognised.
To Gain access to the fulltext follow the steps below.
This will also work for DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) which are stable URLs to the same publisher URLs. For example, the above article can be found using the DOI 10.1177/10534512060420020601, i.e. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/10534512060420020601 or off campus at http://proxy.lib.ul.ie/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/10534512060420020601.
Adding Harvard UL citation style to EndNote Desktop
When you download EndNote Desktop for the first time you may not have Harvard UL citation style in your style manager. You will have to download the style following the steps below.
To create a reference list or bibliography in line with the UL Harvard Referencing Guidelines
- Click here for the Harvard UL style, and "Open" to unzip the file
- If you double click the unzipped Harvard UL.ens file, the Harvard UL style will open in EndNote
- Move the style to your C:/Program Files/ EndNote X5/ Styles folder
- In EndNote, go to Edit > Output Styles > Open Style Manager
- Scroll to Harvard UL
- Tick to Select
- At the top left of your screen, where the current style is displayed, click the arrow
- Choose Harvard UL
Adding UL library catalogue search to EndNote Desktop
To import records from the UL library catalogue via the EndNote Online Search feature
- Click here for the UL library catalogue connection file, and "Open" to unzip the file
- If you double click the unzipped University of Limerick Library Catalogue.enz file, the connection file will open in EndNote
- Move the file to your C:/Program Files/ EndNote X5/ Connections folder
- In EndNote on the left hand panel, under "Online Search", click "more..."
- From the list, select University of Limerick Library Catalogue (NOT U Limerick)
- Click "Choose"
- Search the catalogue using the fields in the bottom panel
How to add the Cochrane filter to EndNote Desktop
For instructions on exporting from the Cochrane Library and from all the other library databases to your EndNote Library, see above.
To install the Cochrane filter referred to in those instructions (with thanks to the Library of the University of South Queensland who created the filter):
- Click here for the Cochrane filter, and "Open" to unzip the file
- If you double click the unzipped Cochrane filter.enf file, the filter file will open in EndNote
- Move the file to your C:/Program Files/ EndNote X5/ Filters folder
- To import records from Cochrane, > File > Import > File
- From the "Import Options" drop down menu, select "Other Filters..."
- Select CochraneUL from the list
- Click "Choose" and then continue your import as usual
Transferring Refworks to EndNote
To transfer references from RefWorks to your EndNote Library, follow the instructions here.
Use Endnote when you're not at your desktop computer.
To use your EndNote Desktop library when you are away from your computer it is best to transfer your library to EndNote web. References can be transferred from EndNote Desktop to EndNote web and vice versa. Instructions on how to do this are below.
· Create an EndNote web account at https://www.myendnoteweb.com/ and click sign up. You must sign up for an account while on campus, after that you can access your EndNote web account from anywhere in the world.
· In EndNote Desktop on the left hand navigation pane under Endnote Web click on Configure
· In the popup box Input your endnote web email and password
· Click ok
· Choose your transfer options. You can choose to transfer from EndNote Web to Desktop or vice versa. You can also transfer selected sets of references.
· To use the Cite While You Write feature in EndNote Web you must download the toolbar from your EndNote Web account.
· The toolbar is available under the options tab in EndNote Web.
References appearing as code instead of text? How to resolve this
EndNote: Viewing code like { ADDIN EN.CITE..instead of the citations
What you are seeing is the hidden field codes in Word, which is the hidden code EndNote uses to hold the reference information for your formatted citations. To fix the problem:
Quick Fix: Hit ALT+F9 (Option+F9 on Mac) on your keyboard to toggle field codes. If you are still seeing the codes, proceed with the longer steps below.
On Windows:
- Word 2000/2002(XP)/2003:
In Word, go to the "Tools" menu, and select "Options."
Here, on the "View" tab, uncheck the box named "Field Codes".
Click "OK".
The document should now appear normal.
- Word 2007/2010:
Word 2007: go to the Office icon in the upper left, and click "Word Options" at the bottom of this window.
- Word 2010: go to the "File" option in Word 2010, and click "Options" at the bottom of this window.
Click on the Advanced option on the left hand side and scroll down to the section titled "Show Document Content."
Uncheck the item titled "Show field codes instead of their values" and click OK.
The document should now appear normal.
- On a Macintosh:
In Word, go to the "Word" menu, and select "Preferences".
Here, on the "View" menu, uncheck the box named "Field Codes".
Click "OK".
The document should now appear normal.
This setting is a universal setting for Word, so making this change should fix any documents that are currently displaying the field codes.
Using both EndNote web and EndNote Desktop in a word document.
It is possible to start a document in EndNote Web and then continue using it with EndNote desktop, but there are a few things you should keep in mind:
-
If you have EndNote X or later and are using the EndNote Web Cite While You Write (CWYW) tools, you will need to swap to the EndNote X or later (CWYW) Desktop tools.
-
To do so, in Word 2003/2004/2008/2011 go to "Tools > EndNote Web > Cite While You Write Preferences".
-
In Word 2007/2010, Go to the "EndNote Web" tab and choose Preferences. Choose the Application option for EndNote and click OK.
-
You need to make sure you have all the references from your EndNote Web folder in your Desktop application.
