Student PC Clusters

The University provides student clusters for the general student population of UL. These clusters fall into 3 categories:

  1. available for use by all students and not bookable for classes
  2. available for use by all students but bookable by faculty for classes
  3. restricted access to students of particular courses

ITD is responsible for all of 1 and 2 above. Generally category 3 clusters are owned and managed by particular academic departments, although ITD manages clusters for certain departments.

Within an ITD managed student cluster ITD ensures that all the computers are functioning for the defined hours of opening. ITD provides staff (Computer Laboratory Attendants) to ensure that the clusters function effectively, their responsibilities are:

  • Ensure that the equipment functions during the advertised hours
  • Maintaining the cluster in a tidy state
  • Ensuring appropriate student behaviour within the cluster
  • Clearing of students from the cluster in preparation for classes
  • Helping students to resolve problems that they may have with accessing and running software

A standard student build provided by ITD is available for all student clusters.

Responsible Behaviour in Student Clusters

All students are asked to respect the rights of the other students in the clusters by:

  • keeping noise at an absolute minimum
  • keeping the space tidy
  • refraining from eating and drinking in the cluster
  • don't interfere with any of PCs, printers or other IT equipment
  • don't disconnect any cables
  • do not connect laptops onto the network ports
  • Only use the PC according to the Code of Conduct and regulations
