First Steps to Using the Computers in the University of Limerick

Please follow these steps if this is your first time accessing your UL Student Computer Account 

If you have NOT activated your account from instructions sent at time of acceptance of your place in UL, log on to a PC with your User Name (ID Number) and Password (Date of Birth) and carry out the following steps to give you access to your UL Student Computer Account, Microsoft Office 365 Student Email Account and Student Portal:

Step 1: Change your password

  1. Hold down Ctrl, the Alt and Delete key on your keyboard together.
  2. Type your ID Number in box after User Name
  3. New Students - Initial Password- enter your Date of Birth (e.g. 01Jan1980) in the box after Password and click OK
  4. A message will appear telling you that your password has expired.  Simply click OK.
  5. You now need to enter your old password which is your Date of Birth (e.g. 01Jan1980)
  6. Then enter your new password and enter your new password again to reconfirm.  It is important for you to include both characters, special characters and numbers in your password e.g. N3wP4ssW*rd. Passwords must be at least 8 characters long.
  7. Click OK

Step 5: Your Computer Account, Saving and SkyDrive 

  • Every currently registered UL student is provided with a Computer Account.
  • Students can work on their files in the C:WorkArea of PCs - recommended way - but there are no backup / storage facilities on PCs. All files are deleted during nightly shutdown of systems.
  • Students are advised to save their work every 15 minutes
  • Prior to logging off from a PC SAVE all your files to a USB key. Always make sure that you have a backup of all your files on a second USB key.
  • Personal Microsoft SkyDrive Account:  this personal account will give you access to all your existing SkyDrive content, Messenger, and other Microsoft services.  Note that the University of Limerick no longer administers this account. As a result, we cannot reset the password for you. To access this account you will use your UL Email address, e.g. 1234567@studentmail.ul.ie and your Student Computer Account password.
  • SkyDrive link: https://skydrive.live.com  
  • One Drive is available for storage of files

Step 6: How to log off PC

  • Close all open programs and windows, and do one of the following:
  • Option One:
    • Hold down and keep held the CTRL key on your keyboard
    • Keeping the CTRL key held click the 'Start' button, and click on 'Log Off '
  • Option Two:
    • Press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete (Del) buttons simultaneously
    • From the screen that appears, click on Log Off. Click Yes.
