The University tenders (under the EU tendering procedures) for the supply of PC's.
Tenders are awarded according to the economically most advantageous tender taking account of the ability to meet the contract requirements. These requirements include:
- price (including on-going cost of support),
- availability of other PC configurations,
- proven track record of consistent delivery of competitively priced computers,
- quality of product (robust, reliable and require minimal service/repair),
- suitability for use,
- after-sales service,
- technical back-up and support.
The 7 Universites and some IoTs, collectively known as the HEC, supervised by the Shannon Consortium with technical input from the IT Division in UL conducted a drawdown from the Government's PC Framework in Feb 11. After a rigourous competition a single supplier, Dell, was selected as supplier to all members of the HEC including the University of Limerick.
ITD supports the DELL Optiplex and Latitude range. These computers are built for a corporate environment and include the necessary network interfaces etc. ITD has software builds available for these ranges. If you have a reason to consider a different model from the above suppliers please consult with ITD before ordering.
It is the responsibility of each of the companies to inform the University of price changes electronically as they occur during the year. DELL produce a range of computers for home usage - the Dimension series - they are not recommended for use within the University.
ITD recommends that you purchase a 32 or 64 gb USB memory stick, a USB3 external Hard Disk. This will help considerably for backing up your data that is your own responsibility.
