The Buildings and Estates Department has overall responsibility for the provision of security services for the University. This service is provided on a 24hr/7day basis for the entire 131 hectare (324 acre) campus with building stock of approx 177,782 square metres (1.91 million sq ft), including student villages. During normal working hours, UL porter/service staff, supplemented by contract security staff, provides the Campus security service. Outside normal working hours, the Campus security service is provided by contracted security staff.
At peak times, there can be in excess of 10,000 people, 2,100 cars, together with a constant stream of deliveries/collections of all types and descriptions, necessary to service the day-to-day functions of the University. With this level of activity, the porters/service/security staff operate in a very busy environment.
While the Buildings and Estates Department are responsible for security in the Campus, student, faculty and staff are requested to report anyone acting suspiciously or causing damage to property to the Buildings and Estates Department (Ext. 2001/2006).
In the event of an accident /incident, users of the Campus facilities are requested to report the item immediately to Security, who will take the necessary action, in accordance with the Campus Incident Reporting Protocol. Persons involved in an accident / incident are requested to complete the University of Limerick "SECURITY INCIDENT REPORT FORM" and submit the completed form to UL Security (visitors car park) or e-mail: universitysecurity@ul.ie
In addition to the above, all incidents resulting in accidents involving injury to people or dangerous occurrencesm(i.e. near misses) should be reported to the UL Health and Safety Department here
Campus Watch
A representative from Buildings and Estates Department and from the security contractor are members of the University Campus Watch Committee. All security incidents involving or relating to students and staff are copied to the Committee. Community Gardai also attend on a regular basis. The Campus Watch Committee issues Campus Watch Cards, which contain the following Emergency Numbers:
