Car Parking Map

General Information

Car parking is provided on campus for the use of staff, students, others employed on the campus and visitors to the campus. The University does not guarantee car park spaces being available for any vehicle, nor does the University accept liability for any loss from or damage to any vehicle using the campus, however caused. Users of the car parks do so entirely at their own risk and subject to this policy.

Parking Spaces

As of January 2009, there are 2207 parking spaces provided on the South Bank and 200 on the North Bank. These are divided into the following categories:

Reserved for Staff:
These spaces are available exclusively to Staff of UL, who display a valid Parking Permit.

Free Open Parking:
These spaces are available to Staff, students and visitors to the campus

Pay Car Parking
These spaces are provided at a fee which is displayed at the entrance/exit.

Reserved Visitor Parking
These spaces are available by e-mail booking to VisitorParking@ul.ie. The reservation must be authorised by the Department Administrator requesting the reservation.

External Members of University Club
These spaces are provided for use by external members of the University Club only.

Essential maintenance and ITD service vehicle parking
There is a requirement for specific essential maintenance and ITD vehicles to park in specified areas adjacent to buildings to carry out essential day to day service, maintenance and delivery functions.

Parking Permits (with effect from March 2006)

It is the responsibility of the vehicle driver to ensure a valid permit is displayed at all times, when parking in Staff car parks.

One permit only will be issued free of charge, during any validity period, to any whole time or job-sharing member of staff of UL or associated companies. Permits have a one or two year validity period.

Permits can be transferred from one vehicle to another. This will have the benefit of allowing permit holders change their vehicle, carry out vehicle repairs etc., by simply moving the permit to the alternative vehicle and notifying the Buildings & Estates Department of the change.

Replacement permits will only be made available under exceptional circumstances, subject to the approval of the Buildings Officer and then at a fee of €50, to cover administration costs.

Parking permits remain the property of the University of Limerick, which reserves the right to withdraw, revoke or otherwise amend the permits, and the policy governing their issue, at it's sole discretion.

*Two Year permit for staff of the University are issued on production of a current UL staff ID card, subject to the expiry date. Similarly, subject to verification by Buildings and Estates Department, staff of associated UL companies are issued permits on production of vehicle registration documentation.

**One Year permit for UL Contract and Research Staff, on production of a current UL staff ID card (issued by HR) will be issued a parking permit with a validity period of one year, renewable annually as appropriate. Teaching Postgraduates can also acquire a permit on the production of a current UL postgraduate ID card, written confirmation from the appropriate supervisor confirming their teaching status and their vehicle registration documentation.

Vehicles parking in Unauthorised spaces, or outside of designated spaces, on campus roads, or vehicles causing obstructions:

Only vehicles displaying (on front windscreen) a valid parking permit may park in staff car parks. Any other vehicle, with the exception of a vehicle displaying an EU recognised disabled drivers permit (parked in a disabled drivers space), is liable to be clamped (see clamping policy below).

Parking spaces, where defined, are laid out so as to provide safe entry, exit, circulation around and manoeuvering within car parks. Cars not parked in designated spaces (whether displaying a permit or not) and /or causing an obstruction, are liable to be clamped.

No parking is permitted on campus roads.

Vehicles parked so as to cause an obstruction to other vehicles or to emergency access routes or emergency exit doors, or parked on footpaths are liable to be clamped and/or towed away.

Issuing of permits

Permits are available in AM-056 for collection between the hours of 12.00 to 13.00 Monday to Wednesday each week.

Vehicle Clamping

Due to the large number of vehicles on the campus at any one time, it has been necessary to introduce vehicle clamping to control and manage parking, for the benefit of the campus community and visitors to the campus.

Violations of the car parking policy may result in a vehicle being clamped.

In the event that a vehicle is in violation of the parking policy, a warning notice will be applied to the vehicle, advising the owner that failure to move the vehicle to an appropriate parking space within ten minutes of the notice being applied, will result in the vehicle being clamped.

No warning notice will be given to vehicles parking in a disabled drivers space not displaying an EU recognised disabled drivers permit. Such vehicles will be clamped immediately on detection.

Once a clamp has been deployed and locked into position, a release fee of €25 (which may be increased from time to time, using inflation as a guideline) must be paid before the clamp will be removed. A vehicle which has been towed away and clamped, is liable to a release fee of €150.

Release fees may be paid at the Reserved Visitor Parking Reception, or when unattended, at Main Reception.

Unauthorised Removal of a clamp and/or damage to a clamp will be deemed to be a breach of the University parking policy and will result in the revocation of a Permit (if one is issued), the non-renewal of a permit at renewal date and/or proceedings to be instituted against the vehicle owner, at the discretion of the University.

Staff car pooling scheme

A small number of dedicated carpooling spaces will be available (up to 10am Mon to Fri) in every staff car park.

After 10am these will revert to standard staff spaces.
These are clearly marked with signage and road markings.
The criterion for parking in one of these spaces is to have two valid staff parking disks on display.
The security staff will check these every morning and any car found parked in violation of this policy will be liable to be clamped
