Biomedical Engineering

A new emphasis on research in the medical devices industry has created a need for engineers and scientists who have a deeper knowledge of biomedical engineering. Already there are a range of undergraduate programmes available to meet this need but many companies have indicated that a Postgraduate qualification in Biomedical Engineering was very desirable. It focusses on an industrial sector in which the island of Ireland has developed a global reputation for quality and excellence. The M.Sc Course is jointly taught by the Colleges of Engineering and Informatics and Electronics at the University of Limerick, Trinity College, Dublin and the University of Ulster, with Medical Science input to UL and UU from the RCSI. TCD Medical School provides Medical Science inputs for students at TCD. The joint nature of the Course brings together the world class expertise available at the participating institutions in a novel way. Biomedical Engineering 2

 

Objectives 
Students who undertake this course will: 

Develop a thorough understanding of advanced principles in Biomedical Engineering 
Awareness of current and leading-edge topics in Biomedical Engineering;
To understand the biological bases of the assessments routinely performed by Biomedical Engineers;
Develop critical review skills, in the area of Bio-Medical Engineering

Career Opportunities
It focuses on an industrial sector in which the island of Ireland has developed a global reputation for quality and excellence. The Republic of Ireland now has exports valued at Billion in the medical device sector and the sector is growing at 5% per annum and an increasing spend on R&D leading to increased job opportunities

Programme of Study
Semester 1 

Medical Science, Biomaterials I and Biomaterials II, Research Project.

Semester 2 

Biomechanics, Bio-instrumentation I and Bio-instrumentation II, Bio-informatics, Research Project

Entrance Requirements: At least a second class honours primary degree in an appropriate discipline, or a professional or other equivalent qualification recognised by the University of Limerick. Applications will be considered from pass degree holders with appropriate industrial experience
