Research Themes

MSSI develops and characterise materials from the atomic to the macroscopic scale, providing new materials, processes and applications in four main research themes:

BiomatHealth
Solid state pharmaceutical materials; Biomedical engineering; Biomaterials; Sensors and Biochemical materials

nanoEnergy
Nanomaterials; Ceramic and glass materials; Fuels and alloys

compositesTransport
Composite Materials; Alloys

biocatClean Technology
Biocatalysis; Absorption and Catalysis

sem1Characterisation
Underpins research across all areas in MSSI and relates to the development and exploitation of characterisation techniques to examine the behaviour of materials from the nano- to the macro-scale.

The Institute houses over 200 researchers drawn from a range of scientific (chemistry, biochemistry, physics, materials science) and engineering disciplines. MSSI houses the following centres and programmes:

INSPIRE (Integrated NanoScience Platform for Ireland)

Bio Electric Surfaces

Solid State Pharmaceutical Cluster (SSPC)

Composites Research Centre (CRC)

Centre for Applied Biomedical Engineering Research (CABER)
