The Department of Materials Science and Technology (MST) is one of the ten constituent Departments that make up the Faculty of Science & Engineering. The Department has a compliment of 15 academics, 7 technicians and 2 administrative staff. The Department is unique in Ireland in being the only dedicated Materials Department.
The forerunner of the BSc Biomedical and Advanced Materials course was first established at the University of Limerick in 1985. The programme in Materials Science produced over 250 graduates since its inception. Graduates have found employment in all sectors of manufacturing industry both in Ireland, the UK and the USA. The main employment sectors were biomedical, electronic and aerospace materials. Since September 2002 the degree programme has been significantly modified to better meet the needs of Irish industry. A new degree programme Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and Engineering was introduced in 2005. The CAO code for this course is LM082.

The BTech Wood Science and Technology degree was established in 1994 and has rapidly established itself as a popular course with students finding employment in the Irish timber and furniture industries. The BTech(Ed.) Materials and Construction is a course run jointly with the College of education.
MST faculty also provide many service modules to other courses and have a significant commitment to the Materials and Design option in BEng Mechanical Engineering offered by the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering.
Research and development activity is strongly promoted within the Department which has a good record in attracting funding for postgraduate research from both the EU and Industry. The Department makes a major contribution to the international reputation of the University and has an excellent publication record.
