Personal Profile
Sheila has taught in UL since 1994. Prior to that she was a senior tax consultant with both Ernst & Young and KPMG, and a Tax Senior with Arthur Andersen & Co. She worked in the aviation finance industry as a leasing analyst, and as a programmer in both the educational software and industrial sectors. More recently, she taught in the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, and Helsinki School of Economics in Mikkeli, Finland.
Sheila has a primary degree in mathematics, a masters degree in business studies and a PhD in taxation. She qualified as a chartered accountant in 1992 (national prizewinner in the final admitting exams) and as an associate of the Institute of Taxation in Ireland in 1989. She had published her research on five continents. Her primary research interest is in taxation, particularly in relation to public policy, environmental issues, avoidance and evasion, tax competition, tax and development aid and questions of tax justice. She also works in the areas of corporate social responsibility, development issues (particularly in Southern Africa), language questions around accounting and the role of group work in student learning.
