English Language Summer Programme 2012

  • These are the English language courses on offer during our Summer Programme, running from 25 June for 9 weeks until 25 August, 2012.  Students can start English courses any Monday.  There is also an extensive social programme, which includes many free activities.  

    The University campus is very attractive in the summer time and residents and students can enjoy summer walks and a relaxed atmosphere while they improve their English or attend a summer English training course for teachers.

    General English - Standard & Intensive

    The General English (Standard & Intensive) courses are suitable for learners with various levels of English who wish to improve their general English communication skills.

    General English will help you to:-

    • develop your fluency by providing lots of opportunities for practicing spoken English;
    • develop all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing);
    • increase your knowledge of Irish culture;
    • practise and improve your intercultural skills;
    • develop your ability to learn languages independently.

    The typical General English Standard timetable is 09:00-12:50 each day from Monday to Friday (20 x 50 minute academic hours). 
    The General English Intensive course includes the morning timetable plus an extra five hours over two afternoons every week, 25 hours per week.  The afternoon classes will allow the students extra hours to improve their General English. 

    Students will have extra work to do outside of class time.  Students will also have the opportunity to use our language learning facilities for private study in the afternoons.

    Minimum entry requirements:  Beginners English
    Minimum age:     18 years
    Maximum class size:    15 students

    Each week the General English Summer Programme (Standard & Intensive) also includes :-

    • 1 full day weekend excursion (Saturday)
    • 3 afternoon activities
    • 1 evening activity

    Courses for Students Preparing for University

    The University of Limerick Language Centre offers a range of courses during the Summer Programme to students who intend studying at an English-speaking university.  These include:

    1. Preparation for University
    2. Focus on IELTS and English for Academic Purposes
    3. English for Academic Purposes and Study Skills - 3 weeks
    4. English for Academic Purposes - 3 days

    PREPARATION FOR UNIVERSITY

    The English Language Preparation for University Programmes cater specifically for the language needs of students who intend to study for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Limerick. They are suitable for students who have reached the academic entry requirements for their chosen degree, but need to improve their English in order to meet the English language entry requirements.  They are very suitable for students who have received a conditional offer from the University of Limerick.  Students should be aware of the minimum English language requirements for the degree programme of their choice.

    Entry Requirement

    In order to gain entry to the English Language Preparation for University Programmes students must produce evidence of their English language level in the form of a recent IELTS band score.  The band score required will depend on the length of the course for which the student is applying.    See minimum entry requirements for each course.

    4 The entry requirement for this course depends on the minimum English requirement for a course at the University of Limerick. A minimum IELTS score of 5.5 with no less than 5.0 in any skill is required for students who need to achieve a finishing level of 6.0. A minimum IELTS score of 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any skill is required for students who need to achieve a finishing level of 6.5.

    Course Outcomes

    It is expected that by the end of the course students will have

    • developed their communication skills;
    • reached the English language requirements for entering a degree programme at the University of Limerick.
    • developed the language and study skills needed for university course work, whether for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree;
    • have a greater knowledge of how to learn independently;  
    • expanded their knowledge of Irish culture.

    Progression to Degree Programmes at the University of Limerick
    Students who achieve a final passing grade in the English Language Preparation for University Programmes will have met the English language requirements for entry to degree programmes at the University of Limerick.  It will not be necessary for such students to take an external English Language Test at the end of their course.  Before starting the course, students should check that their academic qualifications will allow them to enter a degree programme at University of Limerick. 

    Assessment
    Assessment will be continuous, i.e. there will be a number of assessments during the course rather than one final examination.  Students will be expected to attend and participate in all classes.  It will not be possible to complete this course successfully without an excellent attendance record.

    FOCUS ON IELTS AND ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (INTENSIVE)

    This nine-week course (25 hours per week) is designed for students who intend joining a degree programme at the University of Limerick or another English-speaking university.  The main objective of the course is to provide students with the language and study skills needed for university course work. It is very suitable for students who are preparing to sit the IELTS test as a condition of entry to university.

    Entry Requirement

    Students need to have a good intermediate standard of English (B1 on the Common European Framework).  Students also need to be aware of the minimum English language requirement for the degree programme of their course.

    Course Content

    The main areas covered in the Focus on IELTS and EAP are:

    • development of English language skills;
    • preparation for the IELTS exam;
    • English for Academic Purposes (listening to lectures, note-taking, essay and summary writing, reading academic texts, participating in discussions and seminars, giving presentations);
    • study skills (including time management, learning style/s, effective learning strategies).

    Course Outcomes 

    It is expected that students will have

    • developed their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English;
    • obtained the skills necessary to take the IELTS test;
    • developed note-taking, essay and summary writing skills, academic text reading skills, presentation and discussion skills; 
    • extended their study skills.

    ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES AND STUDY SKILLS (INTENSIVE) 3 WEEKS

    This is a three-week intensive course (25 hours per week) which helps students to develop the academic English they will need to follow a degree programme at an English-speaking university.  This course is particularly suitable for students who have already been offered a place on a degree programme at the University of Limerick or another third-level institution, and who would like to improve their academic English before commencing their chosen degree programme.  It is also very suitable for SOCRATES/ERASMUS students.

    Entry Requirement

    Students need to have an upper intermediate standard of English (B2 on the Common European Framework).  Students also need to be aware of the minimum English language requirement for the degree programme of their course.

    Course Content

    The course will include the following aspects of English for Academic Purposes: listening to lectures, note-taking, essay and summary writing, reading academic texts, participating in discussions and seminars, giving presentations.

    Course Outcomes

    It is expected that by the end of the course students will:

    • be familiar with the language and study skills needed for university course work, whether for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree;
    • have developed their note-taking, essay and summary writing skills, academic text reading skills, presentation and discussion skills.

    ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES - 3 DAYS

    This is an intensive course designed for students who intend studying at the University of Limerick/Mary Immaculate College during the academic year 2012/2013.  The course is being held on the three days prior to the orientation programme for incoming international students.

    Entry Requirement

    Students should have already met the English language requirements for their chosen course at the University of Limerick/Mary Immaculate College Limerick

    Course Content

    This short, intensive pre-sessional course will cover the basic skills needed to attend a course taught through the medium of English.  These include:

    • taking lecture notes
    • writing reports and essays
    • making presentations

    The course offers an excellent opportunity to learn about Ireland and to meet fellow students before starting your university course.

    The course is suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

    INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY FOR LANGUAGE TEACHERS (ICT) IE-2012-251-001

    This is a forty hour in-service module for language teachers.  Comenius - Grundtvig Training Database with the reference number "IE-2012-251-001".  Based on the LINGUA-funded TALLENT project, which was developed by experts in eleven European universities, the course consists of seminars and workshops on a variety of themes.  The workshops in particular are designed to enable participants to practise using the applications introduced in the seminars, to reflect on how to integrate technology into their teaching and their students' learning, and to develop short pedagogical projects in area/s of their choice.  The course follows a negotiated syllabus, i.e. the syllabus will be finalised following analysis of the needs and interests of the group.  Topics could include the pedagogic use of the following in the classroom:

    • The self-directed learning environment and ICT Podcasting:
    • Evaluation and exploitation of web resources  Authoring tools
    • Social networking and bookmarking Video creation
    • Applications for sharing resources Wiki
    • Website creation Blogs

    Entry Requirements:

    This introductory course is suitable for language teachers with basic or limited IT skills, who would like to learn how to include ICT in their teaching.  Participants should have an upper-intermediate standard of English (B2 on the Common European Framework).

    This course includes:

    • 40 hours tuition; 
    • All course materials;
    • Use of the University of Limerick's Language Resource Area on weekday afternoons for independent study, film watching, use of computer labs;
    • University of Limerick certificate of attendance;
    • One full-day excursion, (e.g. to the Atlantic Coast of North-West Clare and the Burren); 
    • A guided walking tour of historic Limerick;
    • A half-day excursion to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park;
    • 3 afternoon activities and 1 evening activity;
    • Farewell reception.

    Course Outcomes:

    It is expected that participants:

    • will have reflected on the role that ICT can play in supporting language learning and promoting self-directed learning in their individual pedagogic settings;
    • will have become familiar with the themes, applications and tools mentioned above and will have had hands-on practice with at least six applications;
    • will have developed short pedagogical projects and an individual electronic teaching portfolio, which they can later avail of in their own teaching contexts.

    To secure a place on a course, students should return a completed application form to the University of Limerick Language Centre.
    A provisional letter of acceptance will be issued pending grant approval.
    This letter will remain valid up to 4 weeks before the course start date.
    All fees must be paid in full 4 weeks in advance of course commencement.
    Applicants who wish to apply for a course after this date should first check whether there is a place available on their chosen course.
