The mission of the Department of History is to empower students through an understanding of the past to engage critically with issues of tomorrow.
Welcome to the Department of History at the University of Limerick. History has been taught as an integral part of undergraduate programmes since the foundation of the University in 1972. The Department offers a wide range of rewarding and challenging undergraduate and postgraduate degree and certificate programmes, which attract several hundred home and international students each year.
The Department's academic staff write and teach on the social, cultural and political history of Ireland, Europe, the Americas and Asia, taking local, national and international perspectives. Staff members have an impressive publication record at all levels, and this has created a vibrant research culture not only among our academics but also among the student body. There is a thriving student History Society, which takes the subject outside the lecture theatre and publishes the only student-edited journal in Ireland - History Studies.
The Department is proud host to a wider community of those interested in the study of history and actively promotes that study in the local community, in other academic disciplines at UL and with other institutions outside UL.
As you browse this site, I am confident that you will find many items of interest and would encourage you to contact us if you require further details. The Department always provides a welcoming response to those who share our commitment to the advancement of history within academic and societal discourse.
