 Based in a new building, the Language Centre has:

  • Excellent teaching and support staff

Cafes/Bars/Restaurants

Students can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in one of the 16 cafes/bars/restaurants on campus.  The variety and cost of food varies.  The River Cafe is the closest cafe to the Languages Building.

Music, Arts and Culture

The University is currently home to the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance - an internationally acclaimed centre for innovation and research in music and dance performance and scholarship as well as the Irish Chamber Orchestra - Ireland's leading international chamber orchestra, funded by An Chomhairle Ealaíon, The Irish Arts Council.

Free Lunch Time Concerts
Every Tuesday and Thursday, from September to December, the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance run weekly lunchtime concerts.  These concerts are open to the public and are free of charge.  Events vary from Traditional Irish Music to Contemporary Dance performances.  These concerts take place in the Tower Theatre, Irish World Academy of Music and Dance from 1.15 to 2.00 every Tuesday and Thursday during the academic year (September to May).

Concert Venue

University Concert Hall
The University Concert Hall (UCH), is a 1,000 seat, multi-purpose venue situated on campus and the first purpose-built concert hall in the Ireland.  Nightly events include music concerts, dance, ballet,musicals, drama, comedy and opera.

The University is the permanent home of several art collections, including:

  • The National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland
  • The Watercolour Society of Ireland Collection
  • The O'Malley Sculpture Collection
  • The Irish American Cultural Institute's O'Malley Collection
  • The Armitage Collection
  • The Medical Art Collection
  • The Bourn Vincent Gallery is the University's principal venue for exhibitions with an ancillary programme of seminars, lectures and performances.

Clubs & Societies
During the academic year, which at the University of Limerick stretches from September to May, Language Centre students are encouraged to join in the social activities and events organised by and for the university undergraduate and postgraduate students. There are lots of fun activities in a wide variety of areas of interest including sport, photography, film, outdoor pursuits, debating, music, etc. This is a very good idea for learners of English as it is a means of speaking English in a natural environment outside of the classroom while also having fun! Language Centre staff will be happy to provide you with further information on how to join one of the Clubs or Societies.

Social Programme
During the Summer Programme in July and August, a range of optional activities and excursions are available to course participants. Some of the activities are free and some activities will have a charge. Students only pay for the activities in which they would like to take part. Outside of this time we run monthly social activities.  There is something for everyone! Examples of activities which have proved popular in recent years:

  • Boat trips on Lough Derg, a nearby lake
  • Sports afternoons including Irish sports
  • Traditional Irish Dancing
  • Day-long excursions to beautiful parts of Ireland
  • Events at the University Concert Hall
  • International Food Fairs
  • Pub Quiz Nights
  • Irish Music Nights
  • Walking tours of historic Limerick

Sports Facilities

The University of Limerick Sports Arena is a multi-purpose sports facility which has both indoor and outdoor sports facilities such as a 50m swimming pool, gymnasium, indoor running track, tennis courts, astroturf and much more.

Creche - Childcare on Campus

Silver Apples Creche is the name of the childcare facility on campus.  For more information you can contact the creche directly.  However places are often limited so if you need help please let us know here in the Language Centre and we will be happy to offer you alternative childcare options.
