An Introductory Course in TEFL

This one week course is suitable for anyone with an interest in or a desire to know more about teaching English to speakers of other languages. It is aimed at people considering a career in ELT, students planning to travel and work abroad during vacations/gap years and/or anyone considering embarking on a CELTA course or committing to a lengthier more costly programme. It is an introduction and will help participants understand whether this is an area they would like to go into in more depth. 

This "taster" course aims to explore all of the areas mentioned in the course outline below. Emphasis will be placed on learning about and trying out a range of the practical techniques commonly used in the TEFL classroom.

Sessions will run from 2 - 3.40pm and then from 4.20pm - 6.00pm.  Students will need to observe classes on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday morning

Monday, May 28th

2.00pm-3.40pm. Introductory session; world of TEFL; raising language awareness

4.20pm-6.00pm. Teaching Vocabulary

Tuesday, May 29th

2.00pm-3.40pm. Teaching grammar, part 1; teaching the tenses
4.20pm-6.00pm. Classroom management

Wednesday, May 30th

2.00pm-3.40pm. Teaching grammar, part 2; modals, conditionals, passives
4.20pm-6.00pm. Teaching the 4 skills; reading/writing/speaking/listening

Thursday, May 31st

2.00pm-3.40pm. Teaching pronunciation
4.20pm-6.00pm. Lesson planning

Friday, June 1st

2.00pm-3.40pm. Coursebook evaluation. Teaching English for specific purposes
4.20pm-6.00pm. Teaching practice session

Course Outcomes

The course aims to:

·        increase the participants understanding of the nature of the English language

·        equip participants with basic understanding of how to plan and deliver a lesson

·        consider the importance of cultural awareness

·        provide participants with teaching ideas for future EFL teaching they may undertake.
