Courses for Students Preparing for University

The University of Limerick Language Centre offers a range of courses to students who intend studying at an English-speaking university or students that would like to improve on their academic English.  These include:

  1. Preparation for University - Year Round  &  Summer
  2. Focus on IELTS and English for Academic Purposes (Summer Programme)
  3. English for Academic Purposes - 3 weeks or 3 days (Summer Programme)

international students who do not hold qualifications equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate, who need to boost their English language skills and want to enter the University of Limerick then the International Foundation Programme could be an option.

PREPARATION FOR UNIVERSITY - YEAR ROUND PROGRAMME

The English Language Preparation for University courses cater specifically for the language needs of students who intend to study for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Limerick. They are suitable for students who have reached the academic entry requirements for their chosen degree, but need to improve their English in order to meet the English language entry requirements.  They are very suitable for students who have received a conditional offer from the University of Limerick.  Students should be aware of the minimum English language requirements for the degree programme of their choice.

Entry Requirement

In order to gain entry to the English Language Preparation for University Programmes students must produce evidence of their English language level in the form of a recent IELTS band score.  The band score required will depend on the length of the course for which the student is applying.  See minimum entry requirements for each course.

Course Content

The courses will consist of modules on:

  • Integrated English Language Skills
  • Academic Reading
  • Academic Writing
  • Academic Listening
  • Academic Speaking

3 an administration fee of €50 is payable for these courses.  The administration fee is separate from the tuition fee and is non-refundable
4 the entry requirement for this course depends on the minimum English requirement for a course at the University of Limerick.  A minimum IELTS score of 5.5 with no less than 5.0 in any skill is required for students who need to achieve a finishing level of 6.0.  A minimum IELTS score of 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any skill is required for students who need to achieve a finishing level of 6.5
5 the entry requirement for this course is 5.0 with no less than with no less than 4.5 in any skill
6 the entry requirement for this course is 5.5 with no less than 5.0 in any skill 

Course Outcomes

It is expected that by the end of the course students will have

  • developed their communication skills;
  • reached the English language requirements for entering a degree programme at the University of Limerick.
  • developed the language and study skills needed for university course work, whether for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree;
  • have a greater knowledge of how to learn independently;  
  • expanded their knowledge of Irish culture.

Progression to Degree Programmes at the University of Limerick
Students who achieve a final passing grade in the English Language Preparation for University Programmes will have met the English language requirements for entry to degree programmes at the University of Limerick.  It will not be necessary for such students to take an external English Language Test at the end of their course.  Before starting the course, students should check that their academic qualifications will allow them to enter a degree programme at University of Limerick. 

Assessment
Assessment will be continuous, i.e. there will be a number of assessments during the course rather than one final examination.  Students will be expected to attend and participate in all classes.  It will not be possible to complete this course successfully without an excellent attendance record.

FOCUS
ON IELTS AND ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (INTENSIVE)

This nine-week course is designed for students who intend joining a degree programme at the University of Limerick or another English-speaking university.  The main objective of the course is to provide students with the language and study skills needed for university course work. It is very suitable for students who are preparing to sit the IELTS test as a condition of entry to university.

In order to gain entry to the Focus on IELTS and English for Academic Purposes course students must produce evidence of their English language level.  See minimum entry requirements for each course.

Course Content

The main areas covered in the Focus on IELTS and EAP are:

  • development of English language skills;
  • preparation for the IELTS exam;
  • English for Academic Purposes (listening to lectures, note-taking, essay and summary writing, reading academic texts, participating in discussions and seminars, giving presentations);
  • study skills (including time management, learning style/s, effective learning strategies).

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES AND STUDY SKILLS (INTENSIVE) 3 WEEKS

This is a three-week intensive course which helps students to develop the academic English they will need to follow a degree programme at an English-speaking university.  This course is particularly suitable for students who have already been offered a place on a degree programme at the University of Limerick or another third-level institution, and who would like to improve their academic English before commencing their chosen degree programme.  It is also very suitable for SOCRATES/ERASMUS students.

Entry Requirement

In order to gain entry to the Focus on IELTS and English for Academic Purposes course students must produce evidence of their English language level.  See minimum entry requirements for each course.

Course Content

The course will include the following aspects of English for Academic Purposes:

  • listening to lectures,
  • note-taking,
  • essay and summary writing,
  • reading academic texts,
  • participating in discussions and seminars,
  • giving presentations.

 ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES - 3 DAYS

This is an intensive course designed for students who intend studying at the University of Limerick/Mary Immaculate College during the academic year 2012/2013.  The course is being held on the three days prior to the orientation programme for incoming international students. 

Entry Requirement 

Students should have already met the English language requirements for their chosen course at the University of Limerick/Mary Immaculate College Limerick

Course Content

This short, intensive pre-sessional course will cover the basic skills needed to attend a course taught through the medium of English.  These include:

  • taking lecture notes
  • writing reports and essays
  • making presentations

The course offers an excellent opportunity to learn about Ireland and to meet fellow students before starting your university course.

The course is suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
