Information for Staff

The ceremonies could not happen without the participation of academic and administrative staff of the University. These pages contain all the information you need to prepare for your role at the ceremony.

Order of Ceremony

  • Nominees, proposers and members of Governing Authority, Academic Council and staff are robed and form the academic procession.
  • The Vice President Academic & Registrar opens and closes the ceremony.
  • The Chancellor initiates the proceedings with his welcome address.
  • Each nominee is usually introduced by a senior academic, whose address should not be longer than eight minutes' duration.
  • The President confers the honorary degree by presenting a suitably inscribed parchment.
  • Each recipient is invited to sign the "Roll of Honour", which includes a photograph of the recipient and a printed copy of the citation. The President and Chancellor also sign the Roll of Honour.

Dress Code

University of Limerick honorary conferrings are formal occasions, and we ask attending staff to dress accordingly.

  • Men should wear a smart suit, shirt and tie and plain black shoes (no boots or runners). Jackets should be buttoned when on stage.
  • Women should wear a smart dress or suit (skirt and jacket or trouser suit).

Processing

Staff who wish to take part in the academic procession should confirm their intention to do so by emailing ceremonies@ul.ie.  Staff taking part in the academic procession should then present themselves, fully robed, 30 minutes in advance of the ceremony at the designated area as advised by the Office of the Vice President Academic & Registrar.

Robes

For those wishing to hire academic robes for the ceremony, robe hire forms are available by emailing ceremonies@ul.ie. Completed forms should be returned prior to 18 April 2017.

It is a goal of the University of Limerick to work beyond the walls of its campus. One of the most effective ways of doing this is to offer our facilities to those who are pursuing knowledge, truth and understanding.

It is essential to recognise today social, charitable and personal contributions which have had a substantial and long-lasting impact on the well-being of what are commonly referred to as 'these islands'.

Sport is a unifying force - it brings together parishes, counties, provinces and the nation in support of a common cause and helps to boost national morale and raise the international profile of our country. It is therefore eminently appropriate that this university should recognise and honour those who epitomise the finest virtues of sport and who have contributed substantially to the enhancement of Ireland's sporting heritage.

The University of Limerick - honouring those who use their achievements to benefit the people of this city and region and show special appreciation to those who have contributed to the development of this great institution.

Demonstrating our respect for cultural achievements on the national and international stage.

There is no idea so uplifting as the idea of service to humanity.

Woodrow Wilson

We acknowledge the remarkable contribution of individual's to the betterment of the lives of those past, present, and to come.
